Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is not only the main research field of the global environment and climate change, but also one of the hot point tasks at home and abroad at present. Grasping the information of land use and land cover change of region exactly and in time, people could comprehend and identify better the spatial-temporal change of land use and cover, and its effects of society, economy and environment. And it could offer scientific guidance for planning of land use and sustainable development of the region. As the provincial capital, Fuzhou City now comes into a fast phrase of industrialization and urbanization. With the fast development of economy and increase of population, build-up land and rural residential land were sharply expanded in Fuzhou City. At the same time, this sprawl would occupy plenty of the arable land which is very scarce in this area. Based on TM and ASTER hyper-spectrum remote sensing data and supported by the "3S" technology, the structure of quantity and spatial changes of land use in Fuzhou (1988-2004) was analyzed with four kinds of models such as quantity change, Shannon entropy, Fractal theory and Geo-statistics. The results show that: 1) the arable land was decreased while build-up land was doubly increased in the past 16 years in Fuzhou City. Land use change was very remarkable. 2) the concentration of land use in Fuzhou was degressive and the homogenization of land use was ascensive. The structure of land use obviously changed, too. 3) the effects of human activities are the primary driving factor of dynamic change of landscape pattern, and the physical factors such as geomorphology are the conditional factors. As regards the ecological venture, the more the region was affected by human, the higher the venture was .
