Land is the essential material foundation and guarantee for human survive and development. As the frontier and focus of global environmental change research, Land Use and Land CoverChange (LUCC) concerns rational use of land resource, protection and governance of ecologicalenvironment, food security and sustainable development at global, national and regional scale. InChina, land problems such as large population, inadequate per capita land resource, reduction ofcultivated land, soil erosion and man-land conflict are quite severe. As one of the thirteen mainproduction base of coal in China, Jining city is undergoing fast socio-economic development, which enlarges the need of construction land and thus intensifies the contradiction betweenfarmland and construction land.Based on remote sensing images of2000and2009year and socio-economic statistics ofJining from1993to2008, by means of RS and GIS, this research analyzed LUCC of Jining citybetween2000and2009. The range of land use change, dynamic change of land use types, transfer among land use types and the change of land use extension were specifically depicted.Besides, probable problems caused by LUCC were also revealed. In order to explore reasons ofLUCC, grey relational analysis and multiple liner regression analysis are involved to discuss thedriving forces of the cultivated land and construction land change between1993and2008.Suggestions of rational utilization of land are proposed in the end. The conclusions are asfollows:(1) Types of land use and land cover in Jining are classified into cultivated land, wood land, unused land, together with water space and construction land.(2) The major types of land use and land cover are cultivated land and construction land, which occupy more than80%of the total land. LUCC between2000and2009presents thedecrease of cultivated land and unused land, while the increase of wood land, water space andconstruction land. Cultivated land mainly transforms to wood land, water space and constructionland, but by contrast construction land originates from cultivated land, wood land and unusedland.(3) Social environmental driving forces of LUCC in Jining mostly are government policy,socio-economic development strategy, processing of urbanization and coal mining subsidence.Referring to economic development and population change, factors including population growthrate, the ratio of non-agricultural population, total output value of agriculture accounting forgross output value of industry and agriculture, total industrial output value accounting for grossoutput value of industry and agriculture and rural per capita net income lead to the change ofcultivated land and construction land. (4) Measures of rational utilization of land in Jining are put forward. Firstly, controlpopulation and rationalize the ratio of non-agricultural population. Secondly, shift the way ofeconomic growth and optimize industrial structure. Last but not the least, implement the generalplans for the utilization of land and make great efforts to realize the goal of sustainable use ofland.
