This thesis examined several traditional business performance measure systems including the Balanced Scorecard. A review of these performance measure systems and the pro and con of the Balanced Scorecard against other performance measure systems suggest that the Balanced Scorecard is appropriate to be used in the study for its driving factors and multi-dimensionality. Also, literature review suggests that the development of competitive advantage for an organization come from constructing a well business performance measure system except for a well-designed and good implementation of a business strategy. A more comprehensive control system is needed for managing business performance. The system of balanced scorecard, which provides a means for examining an enterprise from the perspectives of financial, customers, internal business, learning and innovation, should help an organization much better to manage their business performance. However, the applications of such a performance measure system in the Chinese Industry remained to be explored. This is the research purpose of the thesis. Results of the study suggest managers the way to effectively establishing and implementating the measure system step by step in a specific context using the case of a Chinese company. The limitations and future directions of the study were also provided.
