The 21st century has been nicknamed urban century or urban era. Since there emerges a new wave of urbanization throughout the world, the level of urbanization is becoming an important symbol to value the civilization degree of an area, as well as its social and economical comprehensive strength by means of globalization. Catching up with the time and seizing chances to promote urbanization is required in the less-developed area along Chinese eastern coast for economical development and social progress. It is also a breakthrough to exert later-coming advantages and implement the strategy of catching up and surpassing developed areas. Taking Zhangzhou city in Fujian province for example, this article probes into the problems encountered during the urbanization in the less-developed area along Chinese eastern coast. It expounds the characteristics and practical meaning of urbanizing the less-developed areas in China, and explains models of urbanization in these areas. It also discusses the interworking relationship between industrialization and urbanization in Zhangzhou city, and then sets forth the aim, route, plans and measures for Zhangzhou's urbanization by researching the unique advantages and obstructive factors.
