RBD (Recreational Business District) has now been a crucial segment of urban system, where tourism, recreation and commercial activities take place. It has also been the most vital area in the city. The spatial structure of RBD is also being widely researched for its importance to urban development.This dissertation started research designed in two dimensions. In the vertical dimension the paper reviews the historical changes in social spheres, governmental and economic. It explored the background and the driving forces of central districts in several particular periods as single-core to axial expansion, and then discussed the developing process and the law of RBD's spatial structure; the inner spatial structure was also analyzed through land use, public space, historical protection, traffic design by a case study of Central Huaihai Road RBD, which is the typical landmark of RBD in Central Shanghai.In the horizontal dimension, based on the theory of urban spatial structure and the theory of tourism and recreation, the dissertation focused on the interrelationship between different RBDs in Central Shanghai, and then analyzed detailedly the characteristics of the inner spatial structer as competative, inter-related and combined.A questionnaire was also carried out in Chenghuang Temple and East Nanjing Road to get the first-hand information from the tourists and recreationists, the result turns out to be that there are still problems such as recreational function and traffic unsatisfaction for RBD in Central Shanghai to improve.Finally, after summarized the historical development and the characteristics of the spatial structure, this dissertaion presented the future trends of spatial structure of RBD in central Shanghai.
