With China's entrance into the WTO, a large number of foreign banks come into Chinese market, which is an unprecedented challenge for the Chinese banking industry. Most foreign banks are extremely competitive with long history and abundant capital. More importantly, they have rich and profound organizational culture. Comparatively, the Chinese banks, which have just been out of the long-term highly centralized planning economic system, have not formed the banking culture with the Chinese characteristics. With the deepening reform of China's financial industry, state commercial banks are encouraged to carry out joint-stock reform. In face of this opportunity, it is urgent for the banks to learn from the advanced experience of their western counterparts, of which organizational culture plays an important role as the indispensable"software"for the company's development. Therefore, a comparative study of the banking culture between China and the western world is very beneficial for the progress of the Chinese banks, especially the state commercial banks. It was in the 1980s that China introduced the organizational culture theories. Therefore, research on this area falls far behind the western countries, needless to say the research on the banking culture. This thesis selects two representative banks of China and America, BOC and Citibank, for comparative analysis according to four aspects of Denison's cultural model, that is, mission, adaptability, involvement, and consistency. Through the analysis, this thesis attempts to find the differences between BOC and Citibank in the building of its corporate culture and to point out the weakness of BOC in its organizational culture construction, so as to propose some practical suggestions for the further development of the Chinese banks.
