General contracting is a popular contracting manner in the engineering field, it means that contractors contract the designing and constructing parts at least on one project. This contracting manner has been developed for a long time in the developed countries, but in China it still immature after twenty years of development. Many matters caused this status, including the government, the market, but general contractors are the most important of all. The paper considered that general contractors who play the main role in the completing market should improve their contracting abilities, only in this way can boost the flourish of general contracting market in China.The paper first defined the general construction contracting and the general contractors, then analyzed the applicability of this general contracting manner and its running mechanism. Based on all these analyses above, the paper educed the essential contents of general contractors' contracting abilities. At the same time, exterior circumstance is always the exterior cause of the matters' development, so it is necessary to analyze of exterior circumstance of general contractors'. This analyze is useful for contractors to orientate in the market well and truly. After all above, the paper studied on how to improve general contracting abilities for general contractors. The paper studied from four ability sides, which are improving the ability of programming, the ability of supplying chain management, the ability of item management, and the ability of technology innovation. In the study process, the paper used the modern corporation management theories, and analyzed the problems in the four abilities, then put forward a series of solving measures for general contractors.
