Since Chinese government introduced the concept of Urban Land Intensive Use in late 1990s, the problems in the utilization of internal urban land have drawn more and more attention from the society. As a result of the ever-growing population and the limitation of land resources in our country, it is now necessary to transform the current urban land using model into Urban Land Intensive Use. However, the theoretical and practical research in Urban Land Intensive Use is limited in our country because China is still in the primary phase of this issue. In order to escalate the level of Urban Land Intensive Use, based on the related theoretical and practical research on land use, both home and abroad, adopting Geographical Information System as technological support, taking old districts of Hangzhou City as research target subject, this thesis explores further on Urban Land Intensive Use both theoretically and practically. As distinguished from previous practical researches on Urban Land Intensive Use, our analysis on the actuality and potential of urban land in Hangzhou City is based on cadastral data, combined with the related results on Comprehensive Land Use Planning, Comprehensive urban Planning, and Land Appraisal and rating. This thesis mainly focus on analyzing the extent of intense use from the perspective of changing pattern of urban land internal structure, and aims at deepening the quantificational understanding of the Actuality and potential of urban land use. This thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter deals with the problems our country is confronted with in urban land use, points out the necessity of Urban Land Intensive Use, summarizes researches on Urban Land Intensive Use home and abroad, and illustrates the innovative points of our own research. The second chapter, which is guided by the theory of Land Rent, the theory of Land price, the Law of Diminishing Returns of Land and the theory of sustainable development, circumscribes the content of Urban Land Intensive Use, and thereby lays theoretical foundation for our research on Urban Land Intensive Use of the old districts of Hangzhou City. The third chapter establishes research methodology for Land Intensive Use based on urban cadastral data, which includes calculating and coordinating of the urban cadastral data in existence, designing the methods for analysis on the actuality and potential of intensive use, and resolving some related technical cruxes. Taking the urban districts of Hangzhou City as an example, the fourth chapter takes full advantage of the related results on Comprehensive Land Use Planning, Comprehensive urban Planning, and Land Appraisal and rating, and systematically analyzed the actuality of urban land use and the potential of intensive land use. The concluding chapter of this thesis explores the existing problems in the procedure of urban land use in Hangzhou City, and provides some potential solutions for them.
