There is a shortage of land resources in our country. In the meantime, the urbanization in our country starts to develop and progress, signifying the rapid expansion of the use of land. The study of intensive use of land, therefore, is of great significance not only from the perspective of protecting land resources, but from the perspective of the urban development and the rational distribution of land in cities.Based on the relevant theoretical studies and research methods home and abroad, the present study, taking Lanzhou city as an instance, has attempted to make an analysis of the situation of land use in Lanzhou through collecting materials and compensatory investigation. At the same time, it makes a comparison with the other nine western cities in China and provides certain proposals as regards the intensive use of land resources in the city. The present thesis is organized into seven chapters:The first chapter elaborates the research background, significance of the study, and the current state of research on the intensive use of land in cities home and abroad. The concept and implication of the intensive use of land in city are proposed on such basis. The second chapter reviews the relevant theoretical bases of intensive use of land in cities, including location theory, land rent theory, land pay law theory, ecological resource optimization law, and sustainable development theory. These factors and their relationship with the intensive use of land in the city are analyzed, together with their implications for the intensive use of land. The rule of intensive use of land in the city is illustrated in the third chapter. This chapter starts with the analysis of the factors constraining the intensive use of land, followed by the rule of spatial distribution of the intensive use of land. The fourth chapter makes an investigation into the intensive use of land in Lanzhou city. The factors influencing the formation and development of the tenitory in Lanzhou are analyzed based on the relevant materials available. Also included in this chapter is the analysis of the dynamic evolution of the intensive use of land in Lanzhou city, which can be divided into four stages: (1) the pattern of single-focus land utilization before and after the foundation of new China, (2) the obvious expansion of cities and the formation of the pattern of land utilization(1954-1978), (3) the revision in the pattern of land utilization (1978-2000) (4) the optimization of the structure of land use(2000-). The tendency of intensive use of land in Lanzhou city is discussed at the end of this chapter. The fifth chapter establishes a system of criteria in evaluating the intensive use of land. A comprehensive evaluation of the Lanzhou city as well as the other nine western cities in China has been made using the factorial analysis method, which is followed by a comparative analysis of the degree of intensive use of land in Lanzhou city. It has been found that the intensive use of land in Lanzhou is on the average level among the ten western cities. In chapter six, strategies and suggestions have been proposed as regards the intensive use of land in Lanzhou city on the basis of the current state of land use. The seventh chapter winds up the discussion, pointing out the findings of the present thesis as well as the areas for further study.
