Recreational demands which were accelerated by: 1) the adoption of theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the UnitedNations in 1948, which includes the right to leisure and recreation (Every citizenhas the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours, andperiodic holidays with pay ......); 2) an increase in free time for almost everycitizen in many countries regardless of social class and lifestyle; 3) the adventof industrialization and automation which allowed for greater free time; 4) theprovision of adequate means of transportation which takes the desiring personto the spots of his or her choice;5) an increase in urbanization (In 2004 there were661 cities in China, and by 2005 the level of urbanization reached to 42.99%). In a word,which promote the domestic and holiday tourism developing rapidly. Due toappropriate distance away from the core city, low cost, abundant recreationalresources and convenient transportation and communication, a large amount ofcity residents are lured to the recreational area around city (RAAC) forsightseeing, vocation, leisure and entertainment. RAAC become the hot areasof residents recreation, investment and development. So more and more localgovernments, scholars, investors and developers begin to pay more attention onRAAC. Especially recreational experts have paid more attention to the researchon RAAC. Development of recreation around city (RAC) indicates that allrecreational activities around city finally rely on the recreational space around city, Recreation spatial structure around city (RSSAC) is the shadow ofrecreational activities around city and the "indicator" of the development ofrecreation around city (RAC). The evolution of RSSAC is always accompaniedwith Development of RAC, RSSAC is the result of the development of RAC,the foundation of the development of RAC, and also is the one of roots of RACproblems. That is to say, the development of RAC and the evolution of RSSACwhich are two aspects of the same problem, impacting and effecting each other.So improving the research on RSSAC, not only can recognize the rules ofaggregation and distribution of RAC flows, but also has great significance ofunderstanding the operational mechanism of recreational activities around cityand the promotion of RAC sustainable development.Currently, research on the RAC at home and abroad mainly focuses oncharacters of recreational behavior around city, recreational belt around city(ReBAM) and its forming mechanism and so on, lacking of systematic researchon the concept of the recreation spatial space around city (RSSAC), the keyelements, forming mechanism, the interaction of the RSSAC and therecreational behavior around city and the optimization of the RSSAC. And theempirical studies are more the theoretical studies in civil, the empirical studiesmainly concentrate on Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan, xi'an etcmetropolises, lacking the studies on the medium and small-sized cities. Based onthis, the thesis aims at the foundation of the basic theories of the RSSAC,opening out the coherent relationship between recreational behaviors andRSSAC, setting up a mode of optimization of RSSAC, to direct the optimizationof recreation spatial structure around Nanning. My train of thought in the wholethesis is as below: on the basis of predecessors studies, establishing aninterdisciplinary ground connecting RAC and urban geography, to lay atheoretic basis for examining recreational behaviors around city on the space around city, to found the basic theories for the optimization of RSSAC. The context is: the summary of studies on RSSAC in home and abroad, the question identified——the research on the basic theories of RSSAC——the optimization of recreation spatial space around Nanning——the main conclusions and outlook of the RSSAC.Based on two core questions studies—"theories" and "application" of the RSSAC, this whole thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction, including the research background, the significance, the summary of relative studies in home and abroad, the framework and approach; Chapter 2 is basic theory research, mainly discusses the connotations and elements, the forming and developing mechanism, the coherent relationship between recreational flows and RSSAC, the distribution mode and optimization of RSSAC; the empirical study of this thesis consists of Chapter 3, Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, starting from the research area——Nanning's general situation and current recreational situation around Nanning, then chapter 4 and chapter 5 mainly focus on the analysis of the current situation and the optimization of the recreational spatial structure around Nanning, which is the application of the basic theories of the RSSAC; Chapter 6 consists of the inclusion and outlook.Innovation of the thesis:A: Systematically research on the concept, the key elements, and forming mechanism of the RSSAC, the interaction of the RSSAC and the recreational behavior around city, the optimization of the RSSAC. A medium city Nanning is chose as a studying case.B: This thesis leads unphysical elements into the RSSAC, putting forward the five elements of RSSAC: the recreational flows, paths, nodes, network and central places system around city.C: recreational areas are the physical base of the recreational region around city, are the physical support of the recreational region spatial competition. The spatial distribution types of the recreational areas directly affect the spatial competitiveness of recreational region. Using "the nearest linear distance analysis method", observe the distribution of recreational areas around Nanning is an intensive agglomeration. The calculating results (Gini coefficient=0.906) prove that the recreational areas around city concentrate in the periphery of Nanning, Wuming county and Hengxian.
