Economic globalization and regional integration are the two characters of current national and regional economy development, which decide the improving level of cities and urban agglomerations in the regional development. As to the city developing trend, it is the global urbanization and city globalization from the global aspect; and is the city regionalization and region urbanization from the regional aspect. Urban agglomerations, as the intersection of the two trends, have become one of the focus of academic research.Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations are the most developed region of Shandong Province. This paper using the quantization analysis, makes a deep discussion about the evolution of spatial structure of this urban agglomerations in the last decade, tries to reveal the reasons behind the evolution, analyzes the evolutional motivation and function modes, and then puts forward some suggestion about the spatial structure optimization in the future. This paper contains six parts, and the third and the fourth parts are the emphasis.First of all, introduce the formation and development of Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations, and then, by comparing with the three more developed urban agglomerations (Yangtse and Pearl River Deltas and Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan urban agglomerations), confirms the advantages and developing potential of Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations in national region development.Secondly, from spatial economics aspect, construct the dynamic system of the spatial structure of urban agglomerations, generalize the evolutional motivation of urban agglomerations into four parts: self-growing power, economic driving force, administrational controlling power and international towing power, and consider that under the synthetic function of the dynamic mechanism, the four motivations impulse the spatial structure evolution of urban agglomerations.Thirdly, from the layer structure (the scale structure and the economic spatial structure) and interaction between cities, analyzes the spatial structure evolution of Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations, and basing on the demonstration analysis, conclude the historical track of the evolution. Finally, according to the evolution track and the motivation mechanism of Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations, this paper puts forward some suggestion about the spatial structure optimization, and provides the decision-making bases of urbanizing development for all classes of governments in Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomerations. In the end, it summarizes the researching results of this paper, and promotes the problems that need to be researched further.
