Vegetable is an indispensable subsidiary foodstuff for human being. The suburban vegetable has become an important industry that can meet consumer demands, increase farmers'income and guarantee social stability due to the special consumption habits and quality requirements by Shanghai's consumers. This paper reviews the course of developments of Shanghai suburban vegetable industry, makes analysis on the status quo and trend of the vegetable industry, sets forth the problems in the development of the vegetable industry , which are: oversupply in gross, unbalanced structure, gradual shrinks of vegetable bases in the near-and-middle suburbs, scattered distributions of production & operation main bodies, low degree of industrialization, low degree of standardization, and low quality of overall products. Based on these conditions, Chapter I also analyzes the causes of the existing problems, such as improper management, unsound management team and low qualifications of producers, etc. as well as brings forward the goals and tasks for developing the vegetable industry in the future.
