Folk culture has been receiving increasing attention as a new tourism project in China since the 1990s. Folk culture-based tourism is becoming a new trend in the global tourism industry on account of its powerful appeal and vitality. As a high-level culture-based tourism project, the folk culture-based tourism can not only realize handsome financial profits and diversify local people's mental needs for culture, but also protect and carry forward the traditional Chinese culture.As an integral part of culture-based tourism, the folk culture-based tourism is an extension of the culture industry. This thesis is based on studies of relative theories on folk culture-based tourism discussed separately in disciplines of folk culture, tourism and culture industry. Equal emphasis is placed on theories and application in this article to analyze both the principle and mode of developing folk culture-based tourism at home and abroad. Besides, diversified approaches are provided for the sustainable development of folk culture programs in Sichuan.The thesis consists of the following six chapters dividable by organization:Chapter I is an introduction to the whole thesis. It deals mainly with the overview of the subject, chief approaches and the progress of similar researches at home and abroad.Chapter II summarizes the fundamental theories about folk culture & its tourism value and advances a feasibility analysis of potential development.Chapter III, IV and V jointly form the main body of the thesis. The main body summarizes major cultural events in Sichuan and their characteristics, introduces the status quo of Sichuan's exploitation of folk culture resources and reveals a few principal problems with the exploitation. This part also advances applicable modes of developable resources, strategies and layouts. Advice on sustainable development is given in different aspects, e.g. proprietorship, mass media participation and sustainable development.Chapter VI is a case study of Zigong Lantern Festival, a typically developable tourism project characteristic of Sichuan. Chapter VII is a conclusion summarizing the main points of view and subject involved in this thesis. Besides, it presents an outlook upon the future of tourism based on folk culture in Sichuan.
