The study chose two phases Landsat TM images of October 8, 1987 and August 30, 2002 as the information source, and chose Huangling County located in the Zi Wu mountain as the test region. With the support of remote sensing and GIS technology, I applicated a classification method that combined supervised and unsupervised classification for extracting features information, acquired two land use classification maps of Huangling County. Then I analyzed land use/cover changes of the 1987-2002 15 years in Huangling County from the three aspects: the overall situation, the volum change and the transfer direction of Land use/cover. In addition, I analyzed the driving mechanism of land use/cover changes in Huangling County. The results showed:1. Woodland, grassland and farmland had always been the main form of land use in Huangling County. Their total area were 98.18% (1987), 94.46% (2002) of the total land area of Huangling County. From 1987 to 2002, the area of farmland and grassland reduced obviously, the area of woodland, garden plot, the industrial and residential land increased obviously in the meantime. The biggest change in the area was farmland, followed by the garden plot and woodland. The biggest rate of change was garden plot, followed by the farmland and residential land.2. Farmland decreased by a big margin, and the decreased farmland was mainly dry farmland. Farmland major changed to the garden plot, the shrubs, and the industrial and residential land. The increase area of woodland was not very noticeable. The increased woodland mainly was from the grassland and the dry farmland in the gully slope. The grassland in the east of the Loess slope gradually developed to the shrubs, and the grassland in the soil rock mountain area was tranformed to forestland. Meanwhile, sporadic farmland in the soil rock mountain area and some farmland in the gully slope of the Loess Yuan Region was abandoned and tranformed to grassland. The increased garden plot was mainly from the conversion of farmland on yuan surface, concentrated on both sides of the highway. The increase industrial and residential land was mainly from its surrounding farmland on yuan surface. The water area decreased 22.79 hm2, the change of the water area reflects the decrease in the river area and the increase in the reservoir area. 3. The land use/cover change of Huangling County in 15 years was mainly caused by human activities. The socio-economic factors that influenced land use/cover changes were population growth, economic development, industrialization and urbanization, as well as political and economic policies. Finally, I gave advices that were directed at the shortcomings of the study. They included the use of high-resolution, hyper spectral remote sensing image data, the combination of GPS, digital elevation model (DEM) to improve the accuracy of information extraction, and Combining regional landscape pattern analysis to analyze the land use change process. Meanwhile, as the basis of the driving forces study of land use/cover change, with the actual situation of Huangling County, I put forward some positive suggestion to improved land use/cover of Huangling County.
