Research On The Model Of Knowledge-intensive Business Service In Shanghai Based On Industry Cluster

The booming of knowledge economy has brought a new era for service industry which will replace the role of manufacturing and agriculture in the global economy and has been a main driver for the economic development in recently years. As a main part of knowledge economy, Knowledge Intensive Business Service (KIBS) industry plays critical role in the creating, transforming and use of new knowledge. Because of this role, the development of KIBS industry has become a trend in the world ever since the late 20th century. Recently, KIBS industry is the most important engineer for the growth of metropolis economy and plays important role in creating regional competitive advantages.As the most important economy region in China, Shanghai is the world focus for its economic development. Shanghai's economy is dominated by manufacturing industry after 1980's when the'Opening to the Outside Policy'was carried out. However, this industry gradually lost its competitive advantage in Shanghai after 1990's because the rent and labor cost grew too fast. Despite of losing the attractiveness for its mainly industry, Shanghai is facing with more problems which most other metropolises may have, such as inadequate opening job positions, poor environment, high energy consumption and etc. It has become an urgent task for Shanghai to find solutions for all these problems. Developing KIBS industry is a good choice so it is necessary for this paper to find a suitable development model for this industry in Shanghai.Referred to a lot of research done by both foreign and domestic scholars, the paper summarized the factors affecting the success of KIBS in New York. Furthermore, the paper suggested the most suitable development model and the relevant polices needed for Shanghai KIBS industry.The paper consists of seven chapters. The fist chapter will introduce the background and meaning of the research. The second one will focus on the previous research in this area. Base on the previous findings, the paper will define KIBS as well as the research scope for this paper. The third chapter will talk about industry cluster based on KIBS industry. The fourth chapter will include the empirical study of Shanghai KIBS industry. Based on those empirical results, the fifth chapter will compare KIBS both in New York and Shanghai to find the success factor in New York. All the suggested development model and policies will be given in the sixth chapter. And the last chapter will give a summary to the whole paper, including mainly findings and further plans.
