After the reform and opening up, animal husbandry got a substantial development in China, and the livestock product output has been keeping on a sustained and rapid growth, especially meat products. As the main part of animal product, its production ability continues to increase. However, with the rapid development of the China's economy and the speed-up of global trade liberalization process, the external environment of meat product market has undergone profound change, market competition is becoming increasingly fierce, and the export of domestic meat is restricted by fluctuation of the international market. Based on the big animal husbandry province Hebei, an in-depth study and analysis of meat market competitiveness and a proposal of corresponding measures are of important practical significance to animal husbandry development in Hebei, and even the whole country.On the basis of systematically analyzing the concept of competitiveness, theories related to the issue of competitiveness in the beginning, and combining the current empirical studies of competitiveness of animal products, this paper comes to form the frame of the whole study. Under this framework, the production and sale of Hebei meat are reviewed in the beginning, and the competitiveness of livestock (poultry) meat of Hebei are calculated and evaluated, using several individual indexes and measures: the market share, the export contribution rate, the export -oriented rate, revealed comparative advantage, from static and dynamic angle, and also an objective conclusion is drawn. Then combing actual circumstance of animal husbandry development in Hebei, the study carries on a comparatively comprehensive analyzing the direct factors (cost and price, quality and safety, marketing and brand) and the indirect factors (rearing scale, breed variety, the development of relative industries, domestic and international policy environment, etc) that influence the competitiveness of meat. Based on the above, much cause restricting market competitiveness of Hebei meat products is revealed, and a proposal of corresponding measures are put forward: Adjusting meat product structure of Hebei: give attention and support to develop mutton and beef production outstandingly, improve goat (sheep) and cattle varieties, put forth effort to improve the quality and grade of mutton and beef, put into full play the competitive advantage of mutton and beef; Steady poultry meat production, reduce production cost of table poultry, and improve the column rate and the fodder conversion ratios; Reduce the production proportion of pork gradually, emphasize to enhance the column rate and red meat rate of live pig, and improve the quality of pork energetically to promote export competitiveness of pock. Meanwhile, implement standardizing production and management, push large-scale rearing form, build the improved livestock (poultry) breeding system, establish and improve quality and safety supervision system, foster leading enterprises, cultivate industry brand, foster the growth of animal husbandry organization, support the development of correlative industries, increase policy support ,and exploit the international market.
