Recently, employment obtaining of postgraduates is getting serious. One important reason is postgraduates' competencies are dissatisfactory. On the other hand, the entrance examination for postgraduates is criticized by some tutors, some of them advised: the entrance examination for postgraduates should be reformed from checking abilities of taking exams into checking their competency. Thus, what kind of competencies can be exam to predict their behavior afterward; What kind of competencies that the excellent postgraduates have deserves attention. This research uses competency, a tool of human resource domain. Distinguishing excellent and ordinary, this trait of the tool is just what we want. To research student with the tool of domain of human resource is also innovative.This research interviewed 17 postgraduates, including 9 excellent and 8 ordinary ones, by behavioral event interview (BEI). Then type them into documents. After pre-coding, we edited Spencer's competency dictionary, formed our postgraduate competency dictionary. After coded all 17 documents with postgraduate competency dictionary, we counted frequencies of the codes, compared excellent and ordinary, formed the competency model of postgraduates. Then, we formed questionnaire which depend on the competency model of postgraduates, to validate the model. Results are as follows:1. Competency scores using coding standard of average score and maximal score showed more reliability, competency's frequencies was influenced by interview length.2. With the research method of competency, that is, BEI, coding, statistic, we educed the competency model of postgraduate. The model includes 10 competencies. 5 are competencies of excellent postgraduates: Result-concerning, Interpersonal-understanding, Summarizing, Self-controlling, Interests; the other 5 are competencies that all postgraduates' have: Initiative, Information-searching, Self-confidence, Analytic-thinking, and Communicating.3. In the process of validating the competency model, the questionnaire which depends on the model shows result as follow: At all 10 competencies, the excellent get higher average score than ordinary. 6 of 10 competencies show remarkable difference, including 4 competencies of excellent postgraduates, 2 of competencies that all postgraduates have. This indicates the model can differentiate excellent and ordinary effectively.4. Compare with Spencer's competency model of technician/professional, our competency model of postgraduates has 7 competencies as the same or analogous as Spencer's competency model of technician/ professional. The other 3 are different.
