Energy safety and utilization has become an urgent issue for the whole world. China is also facing these kinds of problems. As China is rich in coal resources and lack of oil and gas resources, the main energy supply in a long time will still be coal resources. However, many problems exist in the coal industry, which may hinder economic development of the whole country. As nonrenewable resource, coal must be used effectively so as to guarantee the development of this generation and also the following generations. People may use alternative energy or carry out intensive processing to reduce coal utilization and raise economic profits.The author chooses coal industry in Shanxi province as a research object, because Shanxi is a coal production province, and is chosen as a pilot base for sustainable development research on coal industry. Problems may exit in coal extraction, utilization and transportation, however, this paper mainly deals with the problems exist in utilizing of coal resources. Among many countermeasures to solve the problems, the author focuses on coal intensive processing. It is a way to realize sustainable development through reducing pollution and improving added value.By analyzing the necessity of coal intensive processing in Shanxi Province through economic benefits, environmental benefits, social benefits and building a harmonious society, and analyzing feasibility through both macro and micro environment, and also learning some successful experience of foreign countries in the same field, the author gives suggestions on how to carry out coal intensive processing in the last chapter.
