The study of advantages of backwardness is always the core contents of the theory study. Based on differences in history, culture, institution, and resources, regional differences and disequilibrium come into being. Economist and historian American economic history scientist Gerschenkron advanced the theory of advantage of backwardness by researching the European economic history. At the present age, advantage of backwardness refers to the advantage and opportunity which economical development of the country and area is relatively backward. Although many countries have the advantage of backwardness theoretically, only few-countries or areas make the economical development by advantage of backwardness, which explains advantage of backwardness is by no means spontaneous, it is only one kind of latent advantage, requiring certain condition and the mechanism as its foundation of realization. And the economical globalization has become irreversible tidal current, developing nations that are not on the same starting line with the developed nations either try to catch up, or are eliminated due to competition. Advantage of backwardness, as the theory of instructing the developing nations realize leaping development, has the new practical significance in this kind of situation.However, the study on advantage of backwardness mainly focuses on the national and regional levels now. There is little discussion of cardinal principle which industry obtains advantage of backwardness by certain paths. This continues the origin of the advantage of backwardness is the country, however, tied the scope of application of the theory. To analyze advantage of backwardness deeply and systematically, the thesis discusses the paths of auto industry realizing advantage of backwardness in academic and empirical in order to find out the auto industry how to gain advantage of backwardness.The whole thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter one introduces the background of the research, puts forward the question, summarizes the train thought of research and structure frame of the thesis. Chapter two gives review to theories of backwardness. The deficiencies of those researches and the direction of my paper are pointed out. Chapter three is the historical comparative analysis of backwardness in auto industry. Select typical of the United States, Japan and South Korea as a comparison, then analysis the development process of the auto industry of them. The paper gets the experience through comparing these three different catching-up histories to guide the development of China's auto industry. Chapter four analyzes factors and conditions of the formation of advantage of backwardness, including technical conditions, conditions of the system, as well as the conditions of human capital. Chapter five is the paths of advantage of backwardness in auto industry, including technical innovation, strategic alliances, following the transfer of industries, foreign investment advantages. Chapter six chooses the auto industry as study object, verify the "use of foreign capital" that the path to the realization of advantage of backwardness in China's automobile industry is feasible. Chapter seven is the summary and the forecast.
