"Changes in the distribution of income are not only the most important aspects of political in the process of the development, but also the most likely aspects to cause jealous psychological and chaotic turbulence." American Nobel laureate in economics William Lewis pointed out that the income gap is not only an economic problem, but an important social question simultaneously.The widening income gap of residents during the period of transition has affected the social fairness seriously and caused people to change their social mentality. It transforms social mentality of people from peaceful to imbalance and provides the soil for negative mentalities such as Confused Attitude, Anxiety Mentality, and mind of "Hating the Rich", and so on. Such mentalities have intensified the class conflict, further affected the public's confidence in government and society. In the long term, it will change the entire community values and ultimately affect the building of a harmonious society. Therefore, researching social mentality of the income gap deeply has an important impact of social relevance.On the base of existing achievements, we research social mentality of the income gap of residents in social transition from four parts.Part one: relevant concepts and overview. Beginning with the related concepts, the article analysis the Marxist view of social mentality selectively and related research summary, which has laid a theoretical foundation for our studies.Part two: analysis of the widening income gap during the period of transition. It is the specific performance of China's Income Gap in the transition, which including four areas. That is, the income gap between urban and rural areas, regions, industry and classes. When the Income Gap is unreasonable, it will affect China's social stability.Part three: the impact of social mentalities and reasons of the expanding income gap. Different classes have different social mentality of the income gap. Though 2006 year social degree of satisfaction investigations, we analysis the social mentalities function. So we explore the reasons for that at last. Part four: explore the policy approaches for the plight of mentality. Five constructive advices and strategies are raised to eliminate the negative social attitude of Chinese residents, which are improving people's living standards, achieving social equity, establishing a social security, correct values and an effective social mechanism to counsel negative psychological.This paper tries to study the impact of the widening gap during the period of transition from the perspective of social mentality, which is a new visual, and tries to make an in-depth analysis about the status of the widening income gap and the relative impact of the social mentalities. Discussing the issue can enrich related research content and provide a new visual for the government to solve the gap between rich and poor. However, due to limited materials and difficulties in data collecting, there are also certain deficiencies in this paper.
