A Study On International Competitiveness Of Urban Exhibition Industry

In recent years, the exhibition industry has been a economic focus of society concerned because of its rapid development. Especially, in our country, the exhibition industry are paid more attention because it has always been regarded as high-income, high-profit industry. The profits of international exhibition industry can reach around 20-25%. At the same time, the exhibition show also has a huge linkage effect which can drive service, transportation, tourism, catering and other related industries. According to expert's estimates, the economic pull factor of the international exhibition industry is about 1:9. However, because the development history of exhibition industry is short and it is still in the initial stage in China; both the internal management level and external competition environments are not in good conditions, so there are many problems in the practical operation, such as the exhibition centres are not reasonably construct, the mechanism is not perfect, the management is in mess and the service is not at high quality, which lead to a disadvantage position in the overall competition.The article we try to study deeply in the competitiveness of urban exhibition to determine their development level, and then find out the key factors which lead to the gap between Shanghai and other International Convention & Exhibition Center Cities to provide relative reference for Shanghai to build as the International Convention & Exhibition Center City. In the article we also tried to establish a set of reasonable appraisal system aim at Convention & Exhibition competitiveness of cities, which will be a good exploration in the position and development issues for urban exhibition industry in China.Before constructing the appraisal index system, there is a summary of relate theories on exhibition industry competitiveness and analysis of the underline relations between exhibition industry and cities, which conclude the result that the exhibition industry and cities is closely related. City is the base to develop exhibition industry and the exhibition industry is the key factor to contribute to the development of cities. In addition, we try to define the International Convention & Exhibition Center City and its formation. In the procedure of constructing index systems, take all relations into account between city and exhibition industry, try to take both exhibition industry and city as a whole objective. We decompose the index system to 32 items and collect detail data of target cities and then form a static charter according to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt and Chicago, on base of which we analyze comparatively and compose the competitiveness index. In the end, we have a general appraisal on the advantages and disadvantages of Shanghai's exhibition industry, then find the key problems and propose the strategy to build an International Convention & Exhibition Center City.
