Land is the basis for human survival and development. The land use and land cover change is the hot issues of the global change research. Among the studies, the driving force of the LUCC is the most important one. Research on the internal relations between the spatial and temporal changes of LUCC and the driving forces causing this change can effectively reveal the internal mechanism of the man—land system. The small watershed is the basic unit of our study. This is an important mean for achieving the rational use of land resources, preservation of the ecological environment and the promotion of the sustainable development of society.Currently, the research on the LUCC in the Fenhe River has not expanded in depth, so in this paper, we make the Fenhe River's stream area as the typical study area. With the processed the romote sensing image in the 1984 and 2008, we conduct the preliminary study. And under the guidance of GIS, we adopt the land use quantities, the structure change model, the land use change model and the landscape pattern analysis to reveal the spatial and temporal evolution of the LUCC in the Fen River Source Region. At the same time, based the second national survey of county land, we do the on-site inspection in the study area and know its economic development situations. Selecting the appropriate economic index and using the qualitative and grey relative analysis method, we find out the problems of land use in this area and advance the optimal design of land use models. The results show that:1. The main types of land use has not changed in 1984~2008. They are still farm land, forest land, grassland. The trend of land use is:land used for farming and water and water conservancy facilities, other land reduced, but the farmland, grassland and land for transport, urban village and industrial and mining have increased somewhat. The reduction in land use and the whole period of development, land-use efficiency increased, transforming the complex relationship between land type. 2. From the view of landscape pattern changes in 1984~2008, the patch number of farmland, forest land, woodland, land for water and water conversancy facilities, urban village and industrial and mining has increased. Other land's number of patches has decreased slightly. In the study area, the total patch number of types of land use and the patch density increased. But the average patch on land except for the forest land all has decreased in different degree. The total circumference of land also has a different rate increase except the farmland. The landscape diversity index increased but the evenness and dominance index declined in this area.3. According to the analysis of natural factors causing the land use and land cover change in this area in 1984~2008, including the trend of changes of the rainfall and temperature, we got that the change of temperature is not apparent in the whole, but the temperature in the adjacent years have changed dramatically. There is a decreasing trend in precipitation. It is also the main factor of land use change in this area during the researching time. Besides this the population growth, the policy issues and the socio—economic development situations have some influences on the LUCC.4.Analyzing the socio—economic index in 1984~2008, through the grey relative model, we got that the change of land for farming, urban village, industrial and mining has a closed relationships with the population change in that area. And the area of farmland, forestland, woodland, water and water conversancy facilities, land for transport, urban village, industrial and mining have apparent connection to the socio—economic factors.5. Proposed the problems of land use and sustainable land use countermeasures in Fenhe Riverheadarea.
