The steel industry is the basic industry of national economy. Along with the expansion of the steel industry, the contradiction with the increase of production and energy saving is becoming more acute. National Development and Planning Commission decided to carry out energy-saving action on key energy consumption industry in 2006. This paper is based on the project of Benxi Iron and Steel Group energy audit. The program of energy saving is made according to the situation of Benxi Iron and Steel Group in this paper. The status of energy utilization has been systematically investigated according to the audit rules, and more than 80% main energy-harnessing equipment have been done the energy-balance test. Also, the potential of energy saving under the current condition was figured out.Based on the theory of energy saving and metallurgical process engineering, the dissertation analyzed the influence of material flow on energy intensity. In order to analyze the relation between material flow and energy intensity when the practical material flow diagram deviated from the standard material flow diagram, the standard material flow diagram method was adopted. By the calculations and analysis on the difference between the standard material flow diagram and the practical material flow diagram, due to the deviations, the amount of wasted energy was 377388 tons of standard coal. And the main reason of high energy consumption per ton of steel is the changes of process energy consumption. To the issue of energy utilization, the energy-saving proposals under the current condition were proposed. Process energy consumption and energy consumption per ton of steel in 2010 were forecasted.
