Currently, the main characteristic of world economy is that both economic globalization and regional economic cooperation exist, and regional economic cooperation has been a main trend that can not be reversible in the course of world economic development. Since 1990s, with the proportion of regional economic cooperation increasing fast, countries and regions all over the world have established several regional organizations to face and counterwork the opportunities and challenges coming along with the new situation. The Mainland China and Taiwan Province of China belong to one country. In the past ten years, cross-strait economic and trade exchanges between the two sides become more frequent, and each other's economic development has been greatly promoted. On this basis, if establishing a free trade area across the Taiwan Strait, we will be able to more effectively promote cross-strait economic development. And it is also of great importance for the promotion of national unity. This paper is divided into 5 chapters:Chapter One is the Introduction, mainly for explaining the research purposes, research background, present research situation and probable contributions of this paper. There are 2 main innovative points of this paper, one is there is few papers focusing on regional economic cooperation between Mainland China and Taiwan Province, the other is we choose both Interdependence Theory from International Political Economics and Customs Union Theory from International Trade as the theoretical bases of this paper.Chapter Two discusses the theoretical bases and significance of establishing the free trade area across the Taiwan Strait. The theoretical bases are Interdependence Theory and Customs Union Theory. The significance of establishing the free trade area is mainly reflected in promoting the development between two sides, cultivating the cross-strait business of enterprises in two sides, and safeguarding the national unity of China. Chapter Three discusses the realistic bases and obstacles of establishing the free trade area across the Taiwan Strait. Realistic bases include the following 5 fields:1.Mainland China is rich in natural resources and Taiwan Province is rich in capital and technology, so economic development in Mainland China and Taiwan Province are highly complementary.2.The two sides have the same clan customs and are influenced by the same cultures.3. The levels of development in two sides are closer to each other, especially between Taiwan and southeastern coastal provinces of Mainland China.4.The RMB turns to international currency so that it can be gradually accepted as main currency in Taiwan Province.5.Some political powers who want our country to be unified do their best to promote regional economic cooperation across the Taiwan Strait. The main obstacles include the following 3 fields:1.There are a large number of "Taiwan independence" extremists who are against the unity of China.2.There are lots of differences in political systems between Mainland China and Taiwan Province.3. The USA, who does not want China to be unified, tries to prevent Mainland China and Taiwan Province from cooperating.Chapter Four mainly analyses the ways of establishing the free trade area across the Taiwan Strait. According to the researchs on European Union, North American Free Trade Area and the experience of the Haixi Region, we estimate the proper mode of the free trade area between Mainland China and Taiwan Province in the following 4 fields:1.Set up access standards.2.Clarify the main fields included.3.Set up organizational structures of the free trade area.4.Construct the controversy settlement mechanism for the free trade area.Chapter Five is a conclusion, mainly to conclude the feasibility of building cross-strait free trade area, and to look forward to the bright future of cross-strait cooperation again.
