Global Information System (GIS) is a certain and very important spatial Information System, which fuses Geography, Surveying technology, Computer Graphics and Computer Science. With the rapid development of computer technology and internet technology, GIS developed rapidly and the application of GIS got popular in all fields of our life.Underground pipeline is a kind of important basic establishment of a city. Its' safety running is the guarantee of modem city's efficiency and high quality running. The current urban underground pipeline data is the basic data of city Planning, construction and management。 Only after we have acquainted the underground pipeline data completely as quickly as more, we can exploitation the underground space. Such as offer entire basic data for the underground engineering's planning, design, construction and running management.And then, under ground pipeline management system which applying GIS technology was born. There are a lot of management modes and lots of city pipeline management systems. But, these systems all apply the mode of separating graphics data and property data, which lead to many problems, such as the difficulty of data management and maintenance, slow speed to access the data, conflict of many clients accessing the data. These problems reduce the efficiency of the GIS application system greatly.ArcSDE is known as a gateway to a multi-user commercial RDBMS —for example, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Informix, and DB2. ArcSDE is an open, high-performance spatial data server that employs client/server architecture to perform efficient spatial operations and manage large, shared geographic data.This paper apply spatial database based ArcSDE to Foshan City Underground Pipeline system, design and build pipeline spatial database, and carry out incorporate storage of graphics data and property data. Using spatial database technology to pipeline field which is relative can boost up the function of the system database and manage pipeline data better. This way solve the problems such as the difficulty of data management and maintenance, slow speed to access the data, conflict of many clients accessing the data, and enhance efficiency of the GIS application system greatly. It may be a reference to build other city's underground pipeline management system's database.
