Virtual Reality(VR for short) technology is a high and new technology enjoying fast development in recent years. It is widely used in military, medical, educational, entertainment and other fields. It is also applied to coal mining industry, an industry with high risks. VR technology plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the coal mining industry. In this paper, the author develops a virtual mine application software by using OpenGL through VC++in Windows, which aims at simulating an authentic production environment of the mine on computers. It is of great significance for safe production in the coal mine and optimization of the mine equipment. This paper focuses on the following aspects:1.Theoretical research on VR technology:The paper introduces the development, basic concepts, architecture and classification of VR. Key technologies of VR technology that are adopted in virtual mine system, such as the image-based and modeling-based VR technology, is explored in this paper.2.3D mine modeling technology:This paper introduces key technologies of 3D modeling, discusses collection, analysis and pre-processing of data and focuses on the establishment of mine model. Based on features of mine models, scene model is built through static modeling, dynamic modeling, material modeling and effect of rendering.3.Theoretical research on LOD(Levels of Detail)technology:This paper presents basic principles and classification of LOD algorithm and puts forward an improved progressive mesh LOD algorithm based on edge collapse which is applied to the VR technology.4.Virtual mine system:By taking advantages of the powerful rendering and making capacity of 3DS Max, convenient transfer of OpenGL interfaces and detail optimized LOD technology, the virtual mine system is developed based on the VC++ platform. A virtual mine application system enabling friendly interaction between humans and machines is created with the help of collision detection, text prompt and other functions. In the end, this paper summarizes all research contents, and makes prospects for the direction of future research.
