Today, with the change of people’s consumption concept, the requirement of textile is gradually increasing. The function are not only covering the body and protect people from cold, but also beauty-appreciation and decoration. As a result, textiles turn to be design artifacts which have diverse functions of supplies, commodities and works of art. Textile design plays a role in highlighting fashion, advocating popular and beautifing our life. Textile pattern design is an important part in Textile design. Success textile design can not only reveal the artistic style of textiles, but also can improve the aesthetic taste of textiles. Grain appearance, layout, graphics, symbols, and the suitable structure enable the design to cause visual aesthetic feeling and have the effect of reinforcing, reminding and directing the eye. Fractal graph has a character of fine structure and strong self-similarity. Applying fractal theory to pattern design will rich subject matter and help form a new design concept.With the rapid development of computer technology, computer graphics has gained more and more attention. Applying Fractal graphs to the pattern design combined with digital textile technology will develop pattern design vision and help to explore new design ideas. In this paper, after studying L-system theory, one of the fractal algorithm, generate the changed-rules of L-system fractal figures, which would be widely used in clothing, apparel and home textile.The main work is as follows:First of all, this paper introduces the fractal theory and the application of fractal in various fields. Basic theories of fractal has been simply introduced. And emphatically L system theory and its application status has been introduced.Secondly, the meaning and the classification of L-system theory are illustrated. The basic drawing principle of the L-system is studied. L-system drawing program is designed using Visual Basic languages. Changed-multi-rules L-system is studied, based on the basic drawing principle of the L-system, and a lot of graphics are generated.Thirdly, Fractal graphs with rich colors, diversity styles and natural lifelike styles are generated in this paper, based on changed-multi-rules, by combining production rules, rewriting the command strings, introducing random variables and combining fractal systems.Finally, application of the fractal images of changed-rules L-system to textile pattern design is studied. The aesthetic principle of L-system images, such as changing and uniting, proportion and integral, the feeling of dynamic and static and so on are analysed. According to the design rules of textile pattern, we use L-system images to design textile patterns, including alone appearance, suited pattern and continuous patterns. Textile pattern formed by L-system images has the function of apparel, home textile, etc.. The simulation results have been carried on.The research proves that L-system images, which are generated automatically by the computer, is beneficial to break the traditional thinking of pattern design, to broaden the field of pattern design and to promote the development of digital textile design. Applying the images to the design and production of all kinds of textiles, which is in line with the current production concept of ‘small batch and many varieties, short cycle’, strengthens the artistic performance advantage of textiles and is fit for the consumers’ modern demand.
