With the development of the material civilization and the mental civilization, personalized and diversified textiles are in mass consumers' good graces. People are notonly satisfied with the basic property of textiles such as protect them from cold, but alsoget the artistic enjoyment. A good textile through the pattern to attract the attention ofthe consumers, the pattern is the best way to express visual effect. So pattern design isvery impotent in textiles design. Because the emergence of fractal images, the conceptof traditional pattern design had been changed. The fractal images have the consumingvisual impact and attraction, the overall effect is very rich. The feature of infinite-finehierarchical structure and self-similarity to make the new interpretation for the visualgraphics' aesthetic, also provide the innovative method for textile pattern.Nowadays, with the development of the information technology, the computer hasbecome the main tool of the pattern design. Fractal theory opens a new road forcomputer graphic design, and initiates a brand-new thought for textile pattern design. In this paper, we creatively design the textile patterns based on fractal theory, andbring the substantial reakthrough for the quality of textile pattern. The L-system imagescan be widely used in apparel, bedding, clothing and other textile production. The main task of this study is as follows:First of all, this study explains the definition and the main content of fractal theory. The primary feature of fractal, such as self-similarity, self-affinity and scale invarianceand so on, are studied. And the feasibility of the application of L-systems images totextile pattern design is analized.Secondly, the basic drawing principle of the L-system is studied, and the"turtle-interpretation" is used to explain the geometrical meaning of different character. The images of main types of L-systems, such as single-rule L-system, multi-rulesL-system and stochastic L-system, are shown by visual basic program. And the effect ofvarious parameters of the L-system on the images are discussed.Thirdly, the drawing program of the L-system has been designed using the visual basic language, innovate the drawing method, improve the character order and theiterative rules. The new images received still have the feature of the fractal. Finally, the application of L-systems images to textiles are studied. The aestheticprinciple of the L-system images, such as changing and uniting, symmetry and balance, rhythm and rhyme, contrast and compromise and so on are analysed. According to thedesign rules of textile pattern, we use L-system images to design the textile patterns, include the alone pattern, suited pattern, two sides successive pattern, four sidessuccessive pattern. The example of the designing is shown, and the patterns are weavedby the digital jacquard machine.Through the practical test, it is proved that: the L-system images combining withthe digital technology, is beneficial to breakthrough the design bottleneck which causedby the shackles of human brain, beneficial to design for the textile artworks' aesthetics, and accord with the current production concept of "Small-volume, multi-variety,personalized".
