The biodegradable high water absorbent microspheres were fabricated by cellulose in banana stem grafting acrylic acid, which can be applied in effluent disposal or agricultural production to make tropical agricultural waste into valuables. In this study, banana stem cellulose treated with different pretreatments was used to prepare the biodegradable high water absorbent resin and microsphere. Moreover, the properties of banana stem high water absorbent microspheres including preparation method, water absorption ability and mechanism were investigated as well. The detailed contents are as follows:Banana stem fiber was pretreated by the methods of NaOH-CHaCOOOH and NaOH-H2O2, respectively, and analyzed via IR, SEM and TG. The aim was to explore the influence of concentration of sodium hydroxide and bleaching medium and temperature on removing hemicellulose and lignin of banana stem fiber. The results revealed that under the conditions with temperature of70ā„ƒ,7vol%NaOH,60ml/L peroxy-acid, the extractive cellulose of treating was most. The banana stem super absorbent polymer was prepared by graft polymerization and after cellulose molecules grafting acrylic acid, the water absorption rate increased. The influence of the quantity of acrylic acid, potassium persulfate and N,Nā€™-methylene double acrylamide and neutralization degree on water absorption and water retention of banana stem absorption resin was discussed. The results showed that the maximum water absorbing resin bibulous rate was435g/g under the conditions with acrylic of12ml, potassium persulfate of0.3g, cross-linked agent of0.012g and neutralization degree of70%. In addition, the four factors three levels orthogonal test was projected to determine the function of each factor to select the optimal solution. The grade of these factors arranged from large to small was:potassium persulfate, neutralization degree, acrylic acid, cross-linker and the optimal conditions were initiator of0.30g, neutralization degree of70%, acrylic of12ml and cross-linked dose of0.010g.Absorbent microsphere was prepared though rapid cross-linking methods of sodium alginate and calcium chloride. The influence of the amount of sodium alginate and calcium chloride and gelation time on water absorption and water retention of microsphere were further discussed. The results showed that the dominated factors were the shell thickness and internal structure of microsphere. The shell thickness was determined by the cross-linked density of the calcium alginate, which can be controlled via regulating the amount of sodium alginate and calcium chloride and the internal structure was influenced mainly by water absorption resin and the amount of sodium alginate. In this study, the banana stem high absorbent microsphere was successfully prepared. Our research indicated that the properties of the high water absorbing microspheres can be regulated via controlling the amount of sodium alginate and absorbent resin and the concentration of calcium chloride to acquire optimal performance.
