As concerning the high toxicity of organic tin paints, the need of developing new environment-friendly antifouling paints has become more and more important. Zinc acrylic copolymer, which contains zinc atom in a form of polymeric salt, is the major part of TBT-free self-polishing coating (TF-SPC).In this paper, the studies on Zinc acrylic copolymer's synthesis and properties are researched in detail. Zinc hydroxy benzoate is synthesized, which is used to prepare Zinc acrylic copolymer with acrylic pre-polymer. This is a new way to synthesize Zinc acrylic copolymer. The reactive process and the structure of resin are determined by FTIR, ~1HNMR,X-ray and DSC. It proves that the zinc acrylic copolymer has the same configuration with the resin synthesized by zinc hydroxide and a kind of organic acid (such as benzoic acid, naphthenic acid et al) and acrylic pre-polymer. At the same time, the effects of acrylic acid content, the preparation for Zinc hydroxy benzoate, dosage and type of initiator, monomer ratio, functional monomer, the type of organic acid and temperature on the properties of the resin are investigated in detail.In order to improve the resin's antifouling property, a new Zinc acrylic co polymer containing the structure of acrylamide moiety-N-(4-Hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzyl)-acrylamide (HMBA) is synthesized successfully. It is the first time t-hat HMBA is introduced into the Zinc acrylic copolymer.Because of the accession of organic acid and HMBA, the zinc acrylic copolymer shows excellent antifouling effect. After a long time to exposure in marine environment, only a layer of biofilm is observed on the resin's surface being. However the content of zinc should be limited. Based on the abecedarian research on the applying performance of the resin in the sea, the Zinc acrylic copolymers that are prepared with two procedures show the same antifouling effect.
