More and more chemists pay attention to study the influence of metal ions, multidendate ligands, synthetic routes and synthetic condition on the formation and the structural characterization of multinuclear compounds. Therefore, the author has carried out the study on the multinuclear compounds with multidentate shiff base ligands containing N and O coordinate atoms in this dissertation.Twelve title compounds have been synthesized and characterized. These title compounds are five complexes with m-N,N'-bis-(salicylidene)-isophthalohydrazide L1 {[Cu2L1(C4H9NO)2(CH3OH)] (1), [Cu2L1(C5H5N)2]·0.5C3H7NO (2), [Zn2L1(C5H5N)6]· (C5H5N)(H2O) (3),[Ni2L1(C4H9NO)2]·CH2Cl2(4), [Ni2L1(C5H5N)2]·H2O (5)}; complex with phthalid acid [Cu16(OH)14(CH3O)Cl5(C8H4O4)6(C4H9NO)12]·4H2O (6); complexes with N-(2-Methoxybenzaldehyde)-N'-salicyloyl hydrazone L3 {Cu3(L3)2(C5H5N)2 (7), Ni(L3)2 (8); Zn(L3)2 (9), Cu(L3)2 (10)}; complex with N-(carbamoyl)-2-methoxybenzolhydra-zine L4[Ni(L4)2(C5H5N)2]·2CH3OH (11); and 2',2'-Dibenzylideneisophthalohydrazide ligand C22H18N4O2·CH3OH (12).The complexes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are binuclear complexes with ligand L1. Two adjacent binuclear complex molecules in complexes 2 and 5 are combined together by Cu/Ni-O(phenol) bond between the two binuclear complex molecules, forming a tetranuclear unit. The neighboring tetranuclear units are linked by some week Cu/Ni-O(phenol) interactions to obtain a 1D structure in the complexes 2 and 5.In complex 6, the four cubanes Cu4O3Cl are combined together by the fifth cubane Cu4O2(CH3OH)Cl, forming a pentacubane skeleton with approximately S4 symmetry. As a bridging ligand, each of the six phthalid acid ligands is coordinated to two copper atoms from the two neighboring Cu4O3Cl units through its two oxygen atoms of the two carboxyl groups, forming a hexadecanuclear copper cluster. The complex 6 is the first example of pentacubane metal complex. There are two kinds of copper atoms in the complex 6.The two trinuclear units in complex 7 are held together by Cu22-O)2 core to obtain a stair-like hexanuclear complex 7. The complexes 8, 9, 10 and 11 are all mononuclear complexes. Some of the title complexes have been characterized by IR spectra, electronic, thermal analyses and EPR spectra.
