As the core equipment of calcium carbide production, calcium carbide furnace heats up raw materials through the electric arc produced by the three-phase electrode, so that chemical reactions can take place under certain temperatures to produce calcium carbide products. Control of the three-phase electrode of the calcium carbide furnace has a direct effect on the temperature and the level of imbalance, thereby affecting the quality of calcium carbide products and power grids.With 16500KVA semi-enclosed calcium carbide furnace technological transformation projects as background, this paper discusses a design of a complete set of calcium carbide furnace control system based on programmable logic controller (PLC), including both the hardware and the software version, the project design and implementation of the monitoring interface through research on the production of calcium carbide furnace systems, related devices and instruments to solve issues in related to the non-linear, time-variation and Strong coupling characteristics, the difficulty to set up accurate mathematical models, as well as the poor environmental conditions of the smelting sites of calcium carbide furnace. It also includes a detailed analysis of the crucial part of the calcium carbide furnace control system-an automatic electrode adjustment system, and discusses the electrode lifting device and a electric current-location mathematical model. A electrode regulation fuzzy decoupling algorithm is proposed based on analysis on commonly used control algorithm. Matlab simulation results as well as practical usage proves that this algorithm is superior to the conventional PID control in areas of static and dynamic responses , robustness, the ability to resist disturbance and so on..Part of the research achievements have already been successfully applied to a number of calcium carbide furnace transformation projects. With high reliabilities, these control systems, which have met the requirements of calcium carbide production, lowered labor intensity, improved both product qualities and quantities and lowered power consumption, are running in order and have achieved as expected.
