Karez is the largest underground irrigation system in the world, it hailed as underground "GreatWall", and it is a creative wonder of the working people using shortage water resources in the course of practice in arid areas. It has great value and significance in the history of water, science and technology research, at the same time it has very high research value to study the history of Xinjiang, and also it has a certain impact in the world. In order to use and protect Karez better, we need Scientific and accurate understanding of development and characteristics of Karez, this has great theoretical and practical significance.In this paper, Turpan area, for example, based on the deep analysis of the causes of decadence and dry up, proposed the measures of preserving and protecting Karez. On the basis of the present status of the karezes and the requirement for the protection and utilization of karez water resources in the regional allocation system, objectives and protection measures are presented:adjusting the economic structure, promoting water-saving irrigation techniques, building water conservation cities, building new reservoirs in mountainous regions, reducing groundwater exploitation, and reinforcing the recycling of sewage.Made the strategic objectives of sustainable using water resources and operation management.
