Karez is an ancient magical underground water conservancy project supplied water resource for turpan’s agricultural irrigation, industrial production and ecological maintenance. Karez as a water conservancy facility constructed by ancient people lived in Xin Jiang according to the local natural conditions and hydrogeological features, the body of the project is an underground culvert, and the project supplied the water for peoples’ utilization with culvert by the gravity flow of water itself. Karez constituted with artificial excavated silo, culvert, open channel and water storage and so on, is praised as ―the fountain of life‖.The environmental destruction and the over-exploitation of water resources in Turan has led to the Karez can’t supplying water normally, meanwhile the construction of many large water conservancy facilities led to the lower dependence on Karez and many Karez therefore gradually losing their function and eventually being abandoned. Karez, as a kind of ancient water conservancy project has certain academic value, meanwhile as a kind of cultural heritage has applied for agricultural irrigation hundreds of years and made great contribution to the local economic. In addition, Karez also play an important role in promoting the local ecological balance and sustainable development. Consideration of the importance Karez to the local region and the weakening status it facing today, the protection of Karez and the rational utilization of Karez’s water resource are becoming more and more important.According to monitoring and dynamic analyzing the Karez’s water resource, we can realize that there were 6 Karezs dried up from 2006 to 2014, and there are 14 Karezs left can be monitored normally. In addition to the number of usable Karez reduced, the total water yield also shows the tendency of gradually lower. To get better safeguard for using water resource on people’s living, industrial production and local ecological, the rational utilization of Karez water resource is extremely essential. Follows are specific suggestions:(1) Maintenance and repair Karez, ensure that Karez can supply water normally, improve the seepage-resistance ability to reduce the loss of water resource.(2) Protect the Aydingkol Lake, Aydingkol Lake is a surface water resource can influence the water supplying of Karez by influence the level of groundwater.(3) Take various measures to realize the rational utilization of Karez water resource from agricultural irrigation, industrial production and domestic water and so on.
