Motor controller is one of the most important components of the electric vehicle. It enables data to transfer through the systems of electric vehicles meeting the needs of availability, simplification, real-time processing, and anti-interference capability etc. to achieve good performance. Therefore, the researches and convenient operation strategies on motor controllers are of great significance to the development of electric vehicles.The AC motor controller handheld programmer is a manual programming device designed to provide convenient operating controller for the workers. The operators can manipulate the controller manually through keyboards, LCD and RS232 serial communication ports. Based on the composition of the AC motor controller, controlling strategy, protection process, parameter matching methods for motor, vehicle, and battery, operating principle, and relevant domestic and foreign researches, the hardware design of the handheld programmer uses MCS-51 to combine with some peripheral circuits like dot-matrix LCD, external data memory etc, and C51 programming to achieve functions of condition monitoring, parameter modification, fault diagnosis, parameter downloading and restoring the initial to the controller.This paper aims to design a handheld programmer for AC motor controllers of electric vehicles. The hardware design has been improved on this stage. Based on the hardware structural, with the help of modular programming ideas, it has completed the software design on LCD, keyboards operation, data communication and data storage. Through tests of both hardware and software, the handheld programmer has proved to achieve the functions of LCD, keyboards operation, data communications and data storage, providing a more convenient and effective way to operate the AC motor controller.
