Along with the rapid social and economic development, Beijing has come up with a number of urban problems including population, resources, environment and transportation. In order to cope with these challenges, Beijing has set the TOD (transit oriented development) as one of its core theories of sustainable development. Hence, the rail transportation, which is the core of metropolis public transportations, has been improved greatly. So, how to better design the pheriperal areas of rail transits has become an emergency.Fisrtly, the paper analyzes the impacts of rails on Beijing urban space from both microscopic and macroscopic points. TOD, as the basic theory, has been given sophisticated introduced, also. Secondly, the paper has classified those space elements related to TOD based on their functions. Forwardly, the existing problems have been found according to datas from spot investigations. It is noteworthy that areas of different urban functions have their own inclinations when they are being developed under TOD. Therefore, controlling factors of urban space have been raised. Furtherly, the paper explains these inclinations which are brought by different controlling factors. At the same time, it gives corresponding solutions to existing problems under the guide of TOD, other urban theory and classical cases. Finally, the paper raises a theory of urban design of the peripheral areas of rail transits in Beijing and shows how to put the theory into a professional project.
