China's Large Cities Car Parking Problems

With the development of automobile industry, cars began to become common goods for Chinese families. A big number of cars cause heavy pressure in transportation system. In the 21st Century, the numbers of automobiles are increasing dramatically and transportation conditions are getting worse. Car parking problem is paid more and more attention.Parking is an important part of transportation system. Within rapid development of automobiles, parking problem should be given high attention so to avoid continuing deterioration of urban transportation problem. Moreover, parking problem may become to "Bottleneck" in implementing national car industry policy, urban transportation policy or related strategies. Especially for big cities, parking is becoming more and more important. Therefore, it is very necessary to identify the importance of parking problem and to find proper way to solve the problem.The paper analyses car parking problem and its sources in China. The existing car parking strategies including policies, planning and management were summarized. Based on previous research, a future parking strategy for big cities in China was developed with reference to sophisticated experience from abroad. The city of Shanghai was chosen as a case study for analysis. The practice of solving parking problem in Shanghai was studied and recommendations were given to solve parking problems in Shanghai.
