In recently years, with the rapid development of computer and electronic technology, computer-based relay protection device and fault wave recorder are produced, which make designers consider designing the computerized and intelligent substation control system with global view. Integrated substation automation becomes trend of development and has been paid great attention to by related departments of electric utilities. Further more, electric utilities are facing in-depth innovation on organization system and establish the destination of "strengthening management, striving for the first class". Therefore, for both technical development and management strengthening, it is necessary to extend the technology of integrated substation automation to meet the demand of few-man-watch or no-one-watch to improve labor productivity and enterprise' s benefit. However, integrated substation automation became the hot spot after middle of 90s. Some scientific research institutions and manufacturers have been studying it deeply and providing some techniques and products. Though some products are mature and advanced, there are some problems and shortcomings. Since integrated substation automation system is a systematic project, it should be implemented with good co-ordination and cooperation in every direction. Therefore, I deeply investigated some domestic substations and manufacturers and got some basic status about present integrated substation automation. Notice and considerations for designing integrated substation automation aimed at 220kV substation are analyzed and discussed in this paper. Electromagnetic interference and improvement of anti-interference are also discussed. Moreover, The function of 220kV integrated substation automation system is fully analyzed and discussed。 Two design schemes are provided, one is layered, distributed, open infrastructure, and the other is fully distributed infrastructure. The two schemes are analyzed and compared on system structure, network structure, configuration and some characteristics. Some technologies such as network configuration, control network configuration and GPS device are also compared. As a result, scheme 1 is recommended in this paper by considering safety and reliability although scheme 2 is the trend of development with long view,.
