The world trades volume remains rapid growth with the prosperity of the world's economy. The container transportation has been flourishing since its appearance for its high efficiency and fast turnover. The annual growth rate of it is 9% recently, it gained 12% in 2004 and transcended the past years. At the present, the trend of large-size and specialization of container ship in today's world shipping market is obvious. It raise claims in berth's quantity,channel depth, port efficiency and service. To meet these demands, the main ports of the today's world are taking measures to upgrade their class and attract more larger size container ship by building new berths, expanding port facilities and rebuilding present berths and so on.The national economy has turned to keep steady, rapid and healthy development. The import and export annual growth of foreign trade is over 15%, almost double of what the world trade achieved at the corresponding period. At the same time, the throughput of nation's main container ports has a speedy increase. Guangzhou port which is the sixth large port in our country, is located in the Pearl River Delta where the container generation volume is frequent. The annual growth rate of container throughput is 23% lately. But Guangzhou port has only five special container berths, the annual throughput capacity is 205 million TEU. The berths remain over-loading operation status. The conflict between the high-speed of container cargo volumes and the lack of the throughput capacity is more and more serious in Guangzhou. Although the first phrase of Nansha port area was accomplished at 09,2004, Guangzhou port can increase 30 million capacity a year, the container throughput capacity will still have a big gap. So in order to adapt to the rapid growth of container throughput, the demand for the project of the second phrase of Nansha port area is necessary.This paper is divided into three parts: 1. This paper analyzed the necessity of building the project of the second phrase of Nansha port area via SWOT and other solutions; 2. This paper analyzed the present economic situation and developmental plan of Nansha port's hinterland ,and had a conclusion: the container cargo volume of hinterland is enough. 3. According to the characters of the generation of the port container throughput, this paper is to give the prediction of the container throughput of Guangzhou port via index smooth prediction solution and the prediction technique of hinterland generation. It draws a conclusion: the container cargo volume in the planned years is guaranteed. 4. This paper designs the container terminal handling technology via comparing with the several common terminal handling technologies, and selects the best one. At the end ,this paper put forward to a conclusion: building the project of the second phrase of Nansha port area is necessary , the container cargo volume in the planned years is guaranteed, and the best container terminal handling technology is RTG.
