The paper stems from the project of National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (Type A), named "Research Faced to Computer Aided Definition Design about Product Innovation" (No.2002AA411110).The cockpit of aerobus is the place where pilot acquires information of voyage and steers the plane. The ergonomic design of cockpit is one of the important parts during aerobus design and development. The quality of cockpit design influences the safety of aviation. The digital 3-D human-modeling system makes it possible to integrate cockpit ergonomic design into the 3-D computer-aided design environment. It will reduce ergonomic redesign count, shorten the developing cycle of aerobus, and decrease the manufacturing cost products.Based on demand of Chinese aerobus design, some key techniques of human-modeling system are demonstrated and its prototype is developed in this paper. The major research works are outlined as follows. (1)The anthropometric database is constructed. The methods for making human models of Chinese are studied. The skeletal and flesh subsystems are established. (2) The movement controls for human models are discussed. It can be used for the reachability judgment and layout rationalization of components and buttons for driving and controlling. The paper research relates to ergonomics, computer graphics, kinematics, physiology and so on. The human-modeling system could build and edit human model and control its movement, make the design procedure more convenient and improve the design efficiency. Its means and result can be used in cockpit ergonomics design of ship, vehicle, etc.
