High voltage direct current transmission is a new technique different from conventional AC power transmission. It has been widely used in our country and has a bright future in grid interconnection. With the improvement of indigenization and the construction of large power, long distance, UHVDC project, the independence of HVDC system design is significant.To complete self HVDC system design, we must have a full understanding of the flow and principle of HVDC system design and develop a program accordingly. The paper based on the project of Yunnan to Guangzhou UHVDC project establishes a system of HVDC system design. According generalization of the principle and calculation methods of AC side harmonic currents and combining with HVDC projects in reality, the paper proposes the method of converter harmonic currents calculation based on time domain piecewise. On the setting of deviations that provoke non-characteristic harmonic currents, it proposes the method of converter non-characteristic harmonic currents calculation based on time domain piecewise and Monte Carlo. In AC filters parameter calculation, this paper summarizes single tuned, double tuned and triple tuned filters parameter calculation methods. In calculation of AC filters performance, it points out the choice of system impedance and uses an example to calculate the index. In steady state rating, it provides the modal and calculates with an example.
