Building energy conservation is the focus of energy conservation in our country. Currently the most important measure to achieve building conservation is use of building thermal insulation materials. Ceramisite and insulation putty are the common wall thermal insulation materials which are more extensively studied now. There are huge reserves of iron-shale in Hunan province. The apparent density of light green shale is 2700kg/m3 and the shale is not radioactive. In this paper, the physical properties of the shale are analyzed by XRD and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES). The results show that the shale contains chlorite, kaolinite, smectite, sericite and other layered silicate minerals and Al, Fe, Mg, Na as well as other elements.By studying the shale mineral composition, the mineral composition and contents of the. shale satisfy the requirements of raw materials as ceramisite, and high-quality additives do not be added. In the page, the orthogonal test method was designed to obtain the best baking parameters, and the parameters is as follows:precalcined temperature is about 600℃for 10 minutes; burning temperature is 1200℃for 10 minutes. According to the orthogonal test results, the sintering processing has an important impact on the performance of ceramsite.By analysis and study of the 200 mesh shale powder, the results are that the powder has low thermal conductivity and stable physical and chemical properties, so the shale powder as functional fillers is suitable. Shale powder, glass beads, cement and fibers, additive material are chosen to be the raw materials of the insulation putty in this paper. The best ratio of each component be obtained by using orthogonal experimental design. The results of the orthogonal experimental show that:the amount of glass beads and gray shale have a significant effect on the thermal conductivity of the insulation putty, and the shrinkage of insulation putty is determined by amount of glass bead and cement. Finally, the best parameters is shale powder of 50g, with 22g glass beads,15g cement, and 4g other additives. The thermal conductivity of the insulation putty prepared in accordance with the best parameters is up to 0.087 W/(m·K).
