Etudes sur la phonologie Chinoise, written by Bernhard Karlgren, is the first Chinese modern phonology and dialect work, enjoying great prestige both at home and abroad. The study of the description and analysis of Fuzhou dialect phonology accommodates us of Bernhard's general understanding of Fuzhou dialect, which will help in a more scientific evaluation of this book and its value in the history of modern dialectology. The paper analyzes Bernhard's linguistic cognition on Chinese dialect and his research method; introduces Bernhard's study objectives, methods, materials and tools of Chinese dialects; and classifies the description and analysis of Fuzhou dialect in Etudes sur la phonologie Chinoise:the 15 initial consonants,60 final sounds,7 tones. Compared with The Eight Tones of Qi-Lin and modern phonology of Fuzhou dialect, it can be sure that Bernhard's description of Fuzhou dialect is generally correct, and most of his report on final sound in initial consonant and the confluence, final ending of entering tone, lax finals are comparatively correct and scientific. It is sure that Etudes sur la phonologie Chinoise is of profound academic significance and great linguistic value in Chinese dialect study.Furthermore, the paper sorts out "Vocabulary of Fuzhou Dialect" on the basis of Bernhard's Dialect Vocabulary and studies Bernhard's comparing process and result of Fuzhou dialect phonology and ancient phonology. It provides detailed and reliable materials for further study of Fuzhou dialect history and Bernhard's academic achievement.
