As one of the important Chinese classics works, Lun Yu has mainly kept tract of the words and actions of Confucius and his disciples and has become one of best representative embodying the thoughts of Confucius and Confucianism. It is an important book which has exerted a deep influence on Chinese traditional culture. Besides, Lun Yu and Confucius has great impact on many eastern and western countries and their history as well as their civilization. The translation of Lun Yu into foreign language started as early as the end of 16th century and the first English version of Lun Yu emerged at the beginning of 19th century. A lot of Chinese scholars and western sinologist have made their attempt at translating Lun Yu and has created dozens of English versions of Lun Yu. Among them there are two influential figures: one is Chinese scholar Gu Hongming and the other is English sinologist James Legge. Both of them have made use of distinct translation strategies and methods in their translation practice and have made outstanding achievements either in language or in style. Because of their accomplishments and contribution in promoting communication between Chinese and western countries, it is necessary for us to give a deep insight into these English translations thus to perfect the present and future translation practice, especially in the field of classics translation.This paper attempts to throw light on the studies of English translation of Lun Yu and centers around Gu Hongming's C-E translation of personal names in Lun Yu. At the first place, it makes a brief introduction of the characteristics of Gu Hongming's C-E translation of personal names in Lun Yu from the perspectives of content and form. Along with the introduction, it makes comparative studies about two versions of C-E translation: Gu Hongming's and James Legge's, so as to discover the similarities and similarities between their translation practice and form a comparatively objective introduction of the characteristics of Gu Hongming's C-E translation. At the second place, this paper gives deeper insight into the process of Gu Hongming'translation and makes a description of Gu Hongming's political, economic and cultural ideological trend by conducting descriptive studies. The paper holds that Gu -Hongming's political and economic ideological trend shows that he has given priority to morality. And cultural ideological trend displays that he has religionized Confucianism. Generally speaking, the results are in accordance with the previous studies and bear out their points with powerful evidence. It has also deepened our understanding of Gu Hongming's translation practice.Besides the two parts of introduction and conclusion, the paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter makes a brief literature review of the studies on the C-E translation of Lun Yu and Gu Hongming's C-E translation of Lun Yu as well as the C-E translation of personal names. The second chapter makes a brief introduction of the characteristics of Gu Hongming's C-E translation of personal names in Lun Yu.
