Every Chinese teacher should attach importance to improve the sense of humanity of the students through aesthetic education in Chinese class. Among all kinds of literature works, poetry bears the most outstanding aesthetic feature. However, there are many problems in modern poetry teaching in middle schools. Students are not interested in the poetry and meanwhile many teachers don't like it or lack understanding of it or even feel reluctant to teach it. The old fashioned way of teaching doesn't appeal to students and it is clearly stated in Examination Instruction that students are not required to appreciate modern poetry and that "Except for poetry, all literature styles are accepted". All of the above makes poetry teaching one of the weakest links in Chinese teaching in middle schools.Therefore, it is the top priority in Chinese teaching reformation to redefine the importance of modern poetry in Chinese teaching, set right the attitude towards teaching it and improve the teaching skills. With focus on the importance and the problems of modern poetry teaching, the thesis is meant to attract more attention to the issue. And at the meantime, based on the teaching experience of the author herself and some other excellent teachers, she researches on the problems and try to find out some feasible solutions in the hope that Chinese teachers might pay more attention to modern poetry teaching and find something in the article they can refer to in their teaching practice.
