Multimedia-assisted teaching of English is a mode now widely used in classroom teaching of primary and secondary school. It is an inevitable outcome of the combination of multimedia technique and educational theories since it entered the field of education. It plays a positive role in the respects of stimulating students'interests in learning, creating a pleasant English communication environment, enriching teaching resources, developing students'thinking abilities, enlarging the classroom teaching capacity and so on. But with its popularity and application, some defects has become more apparent, such as mechanical presentation, which, due to its too much capacity, is easy to cause fatigue. Therefore, what is the teaching effect by using multimedia, how to improve the ability of studying English and the ability of applying English by using the technique. Both these are hot topics in recent years.This thesis has reviewed the relevant theories supporting multimedia-assisted teaching, like constructivism, second language acquisition theory, cognitive psychology and audio-visual principles, meanwhile it gives an overview of the development of multimedia-assisted language teaching. Such research methods mainly as literature concordance, questionnaires, observation, action research are used to study the effective approaches towards using multimedia-assisted teaching after the experience of many years of teaching practice on the use of multimedia teaching methods. Guided by theory and practice, the author has conducted experiments in her two teaching classes, briefly illustrated the advantages and disadvantages of multimedia-assisted teaching of English in junior school. Through the theoretical understanding and analysis of misuse of teaching courseware, the thesis expounded some strategies correspondingly in order to make the teachers have correct views and use multimedia rightly in the times when there are various teaching methods, to get better teaching results by taking advantages of multimedia's integration with different types of classes and different target language skills.This thesis includes six chapters.Chapter One elaborates on the backgrounds and significances of this study based on an analysis of the development and realities of multimedia-assisted teaching. Chapter Two begins with the conception of multimedia-assisted teaching and then describes the theories and research situation both domestic and overseas.Chapter Three sums up the advantages of CAI teaching in Junior school English class and the problems existing through surveys, classroom observation and teaching experience.Chapter Four, Five, Six tells the most important issue. It puts forwards valid approaches for multimedia-assisted teaching of English class in details, from the aspects of courseware production, the use of environment, the quality of teacher, the relation to traditional media to integration with class types and target language skills, which draws the conclusion by experimental design and research.The author does hope the research results can help the English language teaching teachers achieve better results in multimedia-assisted teaching of English and provide some ideas.
