In recent years, with the completion of the overall reform in the management system in China's coal industry, the coal sector has presented a vigorous development momentum as a whole. While at the same time, the management environment in coal enterprises has become increasingly complex and strategic management in these enterprises has become particularly important. The author, by integrating the strategic management theories with his many years experience in management practices in the coal enterprise, and by widely referring to the data in the coal industry, has conducted in-depth investigation and analysis of the internal and external environment of Xiangtan Mining Group Company (Hunan province), (short as XMGC hereinafter) and he has carefully studied on the development strategy for XMGC on this base.The paper firstly expounds the theories of the strategic management, and then reviews their research results from both home and abroad, especially those achievements of the domestic coal enterprises, which provides the theoretical foundation for drawing up the development strategy for XMGC. On this basis, the paper further analyzes the external macro environment, the industry environment as well as the internal conditions of XMGC and the conclusion of a favorable strategic environment for the rapid development of XMGC has thus been arrived at:An aggressive growth strategy is applicable in XMGC.Based on the theories of strategic management and analysis of the external environment and internal conditions of XMGC, the paper has formulated the development strategy and functional strategy for XMGC. At the same time, to ensure the smooth implementation of corporate strategy, the paper lastly decomposes the strategic target of XMGC, and has put forward relative security and control measures.
