In recent years, Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM) and its improved version Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), developed by Software Engineering Institue (SEI) of United States, have been widely recognized all over the world. At the same time, the blue giant IBM has restored its splendor due to the execution of Integrated Product Development (IPD), which brought a significant improvement in its research and development targets, for example, the new product developing period has been greatly shortened and the ratio of R&D resource waste has declined obviously. IPD can be regarded as a best practical model for new product developing management method in IT industry. It is a newly started project to combine CMM and IPD, to set up the practical R&D process and build a corresponding quality management system, and to improve the quality management system continuously. Based on IPD, Huawei Technology Co., Ltd., has successfully combined CMM to build a series of support process to guarantee the quality of products. At the first time, H also gives the conception of Quality Backtracking, to improve its quality management system and customer satisfaction.The target of Quality Backtracking has been given a clear acknowledgement, but there is still disagreements on its definition. How to implement quality backtracking is also a common interest shared by many domestic IT enterprises. In the process of quality backtracking, H did not made the quality improvement totally in increasing sequence of level 2 to level 5 based on CMMI, but firstly focused on one of the Cause Analysis and Resolution (CAR) among the five levels. The quality backtracking process has been implemented in H for nearly one year, and has made some complishment in lowering defect correction cost, improving product quality and customer satisfaction. As a typical model of quality backtracking, the successful experience of H will bring hope to those enterprises who are preparing to use this process and give great help for them. On the other hand, it is significant to summerize the result of quality backtracking, analyze the current problems and give improvement suggestion for following enterprises to avoid making the same mistakes. This paper intends to give introduction and analysis of quality backtracking process in H, to push domestic enterprise to build quality backtracking process and give continuous attention and research for the process.This paper firstly gives introduction to the research and development system and quality management system in H, focusing on the conception, procedure and regulation of quality backtracking. Then the paper analyzes the current problems and root causes in quality backtracking process of H based on plenty of statistical data, and finally gives improving method for each root cause and optimization in the process.
