The long lag of inter-city transportation was the vital baffle of theeconomic integrating process of most urban agglomeration in our nation. Inthe foundation of the review of theories related with urban agglomeration, this paper gave a definition to the economic integrating process of urbanagglomeration, which has three characteristics as following: fully freeflow of economic elements, deepening of industry specialization andcooperating of urban agglomeration as well as centralization and diffusion ofindustry of urban agglomeration, formation and perfection of urbanagglomeration system. Then, this paper explored the promoting effect ofinter-city transformation on the economic integration of urbanagglomeration, including the more convenient flow of economic elements, deepening of the industry specialization and cooperation, and perfecting ofurban agglomeration system. On the basis of other countries' experienceabout the interaction between inter-city transportation and development ofurban agglomeration, this paper probed into the promoting effect ofinter-city transportation on the economy integrating process of YangtzeDelta urban agglomeration, emphasized how the improvement of inter-citytransportation system affected the flow of economic elements in theshanghai-nanjing line in Yangtze Delta. First, investigated the relevancy andmovement of passenger flow in Yangtze Delta in 1996 and 2004, using thegravity model, with a result that the improvement of inter-city transportationand accelerating of urbanization greatly advanced the inter-city passengerflow and with the develop of economy, the inter-city passenger flow becamemore sensitive to the resistance of transportation; second, computed theflexible coefficient of freight traffic with a result that, the flexible coefficientof road freight traffic was bigger than the flexible coefficient of total freighttraffic, and the flexible coefficient had a decreasing tendency generally; atlast, analyzed the pertinence of freight traffic and GDP, the result suggestedan high pertinence between them.
