Britain is one of the typical countries in the world history.Its history has attracted a lot of interest of many historians.As an important port city in the history of Britain, the economic development of Bristol has its special side.This article is mainly aimed at investigating the general line of the city's economic development during 11th century to 18th century,and from this,this paper wants to show the various process of an active economic city,which has an initial stage,prosperous period,the relative decline,vibrant development and until today there is hardly anyone to mention this marginal city,and in accordance to this,this paper also wants to explore the causes of such changes.In addition,through the research of this western port city in Britain between the Middle Ages and the recent times,this paper also tries to find the influence of the general British economy development which made to this city,and on the basis of this we can make better research and discussion with the development of the whole British economy and the regional economy.The whole article is divided into three parts.ChapterⅠbriefly introduces the early history of the city of Bristol and the general development after the Norman Conquest,and the trade situation with Ireland and other countries.Especially during the 14th and 15th century,though the city had gone through many changes,the trade of Bristol came to the initial stage.ChapterⅡdiscusses the transit point for trade in and out of Britain during 15th and 16th century,Bristol not only had wide range and many trade routes,but also developed its own manufacturing industries.This was an important period in Bristol's history of its economic development,and at the same time the merchants in this city also developed its overseas venture,which all laid a good foundation for the 17th and 18th century.ChapterⅢis an analysis of the 17th century.Britain entered the Atlantic trade period,and Bristol had also been actively involved in the trade and played an important role.Its trade relationship with South America and the West Indian was the most important,though it also suffered a decline,the decline was always relative, along with the ups-and-downs development during this period.
